Tight Sketch for Ostracon pieces #2

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

For our Book Seminar class we had to read "Ostracon," A short story by Alex Ross about an elderly woman who is showing early signs of Dementia. From this we had to come up with a series of images based on a theme of our choosing that related to the story. I chose to paint a series of images about the relation between memory and the senses. This is the first piece, based on touch...showing an elderly woman examining the aging process of her hands.
So for our experimental media class, we had to come up with "Orange Wrappers" that included an orange, a gorilla, and a stencil or stamp. I like the way it turned out.

A quick Illustration that we had to complete for digital portfolio class at SVA. It had to be Autumn themed, so I decided to draw some sugar skulls since the day of the dead falls in Autumn.

Finally got decent enough internet...and a good enough photo of one of my thesis paintings to post. Hopefully I'll be able to get the others soon.

First thesis painting so far. Working on a gessoed masonite board with colored pencils first to work out the values. Going to go over it with a layer of skin colored matte medium, and work some other colors into the figure using this process.

Shitty camera phone picture though...lol.

THESIS DEADLINES ARE APPROACHING!!! time is dwindling.

So my senior thesis is going to be five paintings based on a selection of dreams that I've had in the past year. I'm going to illustrate these dreams, as well as the meaning that I've discovered behind the imagery in them. Hopefully they'll turn out good, I'm really excited about them.

with that said, here's a rough sketch of the first piece I'm doing.

Dream: I was laying down in water, and could hear some sort of chanting in my ears. When I looked up, the source of the chanting was above me. There were three figures...two in shadow, and a woman holding a book, from which she seemed to be reading. This kind of freaked me out, lol... so I woke up. At that time, I was awake and could see around my room, but couldn't move at all, and could still hear the voices chanting.

Started out the character study on some toned paper using graphite, ink, and a white colored pencil. Finished it by throwing it in photoshop and messing around with the colors and lighting.
Character study for the Flying Monkeys from the Wizard of Oz...I should really finish that piece when I get some free time.

Did this painting in open acrylics. It's based off of the song "Strange Fruit" sung by Billy Holiday. Didn't want to really be too literal with the lyrics, but I used some imagery from the song.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
